VENICE

August 11th, 2010…Venice
As time has passed so quickly, I find myself sitting here in the airport reflecting on the stories I have missed over the last week.   So I will start with today and then backtrack.   On Wednesday we ventured to Venice for an overnight to ensure Brittany’s friend Zenia was on her way back to
Canada.  The first day was adjusting to the typography and the many little streets with bridges crossing the various canals.  It has been some time since I have been here.  Once off the fast train to Venice we decided to find our hotel first.  The interesting thing was that I should have anticipated a lower star accommodationwhen it mentioned ‘shared bathrooms’.  Melissa and I were on the 2nd floor while the other two ladies were given the fourth floor room.

As we made our way up the stairs I kept telling the girls that the smell reminded me of when you leave wet clothes in your washing machine.   Melissa kept assuring me that it was my imagination.  I assure you it was not.   Then as I gazed down the winding staircase I could see the basement landing below and there it was….bags and bags of wet towels waiting to be picked up by the laundry truck.  As it turned out this hotel had been an old hostel and I imagine they were trying to fix it up.  Our room was adequate…bed as hard as the floor and a pillow to match.

Venice bustled with a zillion tourists.  Some kind…others pushing their way through the crowds...“permesso…permesso was heard throughout the little laneways bursting with people.  The shops were predominantly filled with masks and other paraphernalia that reflected the annual ball that occurs in Venice every March.  The second day we split up and the girls went to see Murano while Mel and I checked out the two very large art gallery/museums.  I became acquainted with the painter Longhi.   The portraiture we saw was amazing.  Given my feet ached from the day before we decided to take the boat transit at 6.50euro one way.  Venice on water is a whole different side of Italy.  And I had made the decision then that it might be my last visit there.
