Sorrento July 16th
Arrived late last night to Sorrento by bus. By 2am we were in bed. Nice rock hard mattress and moderate room…reminded me of club med. This Hotel Cavour is classified as a 3 star hotel but you would think you were in a hostel. The bathroom was clean, furniture sparse but the towels were the best … just like the Fairmont. The air conditioner worked excellently as the summer heat had reached the sea shore. You had to ask for the remote to the AC at the front desk. Up at 7am to a fresh croissant and bun with butter and jam. The coffee I could not drink and it was later in the trip that I discovered I could have asked for a cappuccino. We walked for about a half hour from our hotel to where we would take the ferry boat to Capri. It was so hot and humid but the scenery was breathtaking. A photographer’s dream.
We split up from our group as half of them had stripped down to their bikinis and complained about how far they had to walk. We found the funicular (a vertical train) and took it to the top. I was determined to find a restaurant for lunch with a view. And we did. The meal was delicious and the service impressive. The two waiters both had a wonderful sense of humour and as we enjoyed in the frivolity the chef came out to check out the commotion.
Ristorante il Geranio on the island of Capri. We had a delicious seafood pasta and then strolled through the gardens. Granita, slushy orange and lemon drinks, are popular on this island. A much welcome refreshment after a hot afternoon day of exploration. I found three art galleries and another quaint bar near the beach. Back to the hotel for a great spaghetti dinner and off to bed early before hitting the beach again. Ciao.
