POMPEII

July 18th
We decided to have breakfast at the hotel today.  The owner, a very beautiful elderly man possibly in his 90s, was at the bar.  We were able to order cappuccino as we noticed a rather large group of Italians at the hotel.  When I went to pay for the coffee he asked if we were leaving today and unfortunately I said “I am afraid so”.  He suggested we pay the next day…a very kind gesture and when I shook his hand he gently kissed mine.  This is the second time since my journey here that I have been kissed by an Italian.

The eating places were a bit sketchy and souvenirs tacky one of those
places that reminded me of Niagara Falls.

Now arrived at vesuvios after a windy road up another mountain. The
area is very depressed and garbage everywhere. As we descended from
the bus a great waft of floral perfume entered my nostrils. Wasn't
not sure whether to barf as I looked Around there was a see of yellow
flower bushes. I have decided that the flowers in such an abundance
smell bad. I discovered later that I was not the only one who wanted
to hurl. The bar here at the top is untouched since the 50s. I must
give them credit, their cappuccino is good although I rarely enjoy
drinking coffee out of a plastic cup.

As I sit here I marvel at how the buses manouver in this small space.
I think I took someones seat. Oh well. I am enjoying a beautiful
breeze. There are tourists everywhere from all over. It is hot and
sweat pours from every pore in my body. Nonna just walked outside onto the patio I did not know they had service here One thing I learned
was that my iPod has a notebook in it and I am now able to write
stories on the go.

This volcano erupted a while ago. So interesting to see people buying
the fake lava rock. I don't ever remember lava sparkling.

Off to Pompeii….quite the history with the city and the volcano.  Our tour guide Fabio was very handsome and shared the stories well.  The surrounding restaurants and souvenir spots were rather sketchy…reminded me a bit of Niagara Falls.
