Today was 36 C and it was very hot….so hot that while walking to the grocery store I could feel the heat of the pavement melting the soles of my shoes and the transfer of heat to my delicate feet was intense. It is wise to come into between 2 and 5 to avoid the worst heat of the day. I thought usually it was high noon that the heat was most intense. Wrongo in the congo.
My eldest and her fiancé arrived this morning and it was a delight to pick them up at the airport.
My youngest decided to go and have a serendipitous adventure after watching the movie “Serendipity” with me and I realized it was her favourite movie.
Travelling in Italy via train is an interesting experience. Her destination was Avignon…to expensive to fly on a last minute whim. Soooooooo she decides to take the train. We enter the world wide web to find that it might not be a good idea to book online as I do not have a printer and am unable to print tickets. So we head to the train station on Wednesday morning and discover that all trains booked to Milan are full. So Thursday it is. I drop her off to the train station at 2pm on Thursday afternoon and ensure she is safely sitting on the train in her appropriate seat as indicated on the ticket. In Milan she transfers to another train to Lyon and then in Lyon one more transfer to Avignon. At around 5pm that afternoon I get a text (thank goodness I bought her a cell phone) and it says “train cancelled next one tomorrow morning at 11am). You know Skype is a blessing as I quickly recharged my account and called her back. She was prepared to stay at the train station till the next morning but I convinced her to get a hotel room nearby and get a good night’s sleep. The next morning she boarded another train heading to northern Italian town I have never heard of. I called here as she was sitting on the train in Milan and the train departed 25 minutes late. Friday was strike day and they have a field day with tourists travelling. As she got to this northern town she discovered that either the train had left or was cancelled. Luckily she met some English speaking girls and they joined in to get a cab to get them to the border and into France. Monaco…at least I think that is what she said and ensured that I bought a lotto ticket because it was beautiful. She had re-routed her train ticket yet again and was making her way to Nice. I got a text message that evening saying “I am on the last train to Avignon and I love you very much….see you in 4 days”. I decided to go to Bologna on Tuesday to meet up with her as her train arrives at 1 am and I will be there to pick her up. I am focused that the hotel I booked has air conditioning and a Jacuzzi tub. What an adventure….like they say…apples don’t fall from the tree. Hope you all are having a great weekend. Ciao mi amici.
